My last entry was in 2002. Have been trawling through 8 years of comments on this site. I was at Sinjuns from 1953 - 1960. I came across an entry for Roger Fellows back in 2000. have tried to contact him by email but the address has apparently changed. Does anyone know of his whereabouts?

1948-55; just bought Frank Smallwood's book on the history of the school; it all comes back to me - Mr Wharton the Head, Chips smallwood, Algy Haythorne, Alfie Strip, Dr Nicholls the history teacher, who kept a notebook full of the names of pubs in historic locations in Britain, Vernon C Osborne who taught English in a really inspiring way, and so many others. Greetings to all Old Sinjuns.

I was at Sinjuns from Sept 1950 to Dec 1955, and remember David Hedger. Does anyone know what happened to Les Graham, who was a ball boy at Chelsea? and Tony Read/Reid. I met them again by accident in early 1959 when I got on a bus in Alnwick to go and see Chelsea play Newcastle in the FA Cup, and there they were sitting at the back. They were at Edinburgh University at the time. Regarding teachers, I remember Mr Cocks (Maths) who had the habit of digressing to tales of his early life in Barbados. Don Taylour (Music) who lived just round the corner from me, and drove a red sports car. If I timed my journey right, I would get a lift to school! Who could forget Algy Haythorne, who at term end would draw little pictures on the blackboard, and we had to work out which towns they represented. Dr Cavell the senior Chemistry teacher, who along with Wal Jackson (Maths) were GCE examiners. When either were setting the exam papers, the school were issued with the alternative paper to prevent collusion.

I'll be down at the Half Moon in Putney on November 23rd with a great band from Dorset that I am doing some shows with up here in Yorkshire. Check out their website: www.stateofundress.com It would be great to get together, enjoy some good music and have a few pints. Anyone interested? Please get in contact and pass the word on! I don't believe there was a Dick Sympson at Sinjuns from 1970-1977 because a) I was there at that time and can't remember him and b) Richard Sympson is the person to whom Lemuel Gulliver addresses his complaints about society at the start of Gulliver's Travels...

Thanks Someone, Somewhere (isn't that a Bernstein song?). But if you check out his essay he does mention chucking his cap into the river... I love that image of rebellious little Mart, the man who understands the language of the street, the writer who catches the argot of the underclass with such skill, publishing this stuff and yet completely unaware how ridiculous it makes him sound... A school as tough as Broadmoor, yet there he is with that cap...

Dick Doodah, Yes pompous fart Amis DID go to Sinjuns. His actual words are (ish) "Sinjuns was a violent school, with violent teachers and violent pupils". He says nowt about his cap. He was expelled, lucky sod.

Is it true that Martin Amis went to Sinjuns? He wrote a terrible essay about being at a 'tough south London grammar school' (as if that wasn't a contradiction in terms) and ends it be saying how, when he left after a term, he stood on Battersea Bridge and threw his cap into the river (what a twerp) and felt pity for those schmucks back at the school facing their empty, dull, pointless lives while he was off to conquer the world. I met him once, when he was giving a reading at Oxford, and thought he was the most pompous little ass I'd ever come across. So please confirm or deny his status as an Old Sinjun... Have just spent a very pleasant hour going through some of the entries. Brought back some great memories of my years at the school, 1953-58. Would love to make contact with my old mucker, Tony Sharples. His father was Bob Sharples, the then Musical Director of the BBC. I visit the school 4 times a year to attend a "meeting," and you will be pleased to know that, despite many alterations inside, the Old Hall is the same as the day I left.... red stage curtains, dusty beams, house shields around the wall and the bacony front... such memories. Bob Tanners little lodge room has gone, but the old school bell and rope still hang outside where the door was! Chas Foulsham (Ex 5T)

I was at Sinjuns from 1961 to 1967, Bolingbroke House. I wasn't exactly a model pupil, but now I have to adnit that i learned a lot at Sinjuns, much of which has helped me in many of my endeavours. Boys in my form included Colin Stevens, John Marsh, Tommy Sanderson, Eugene Sweeney, Eber Kington and Jon Barnes. Teachers included the Trogg, Semmonds, Cox, Hogg, Short (the dirty bugger)and of course the head, Dr. Presswood. I have fond memories of him. Once (not for the first time), I was caught out throwing chalk at the blackboard during lessons with a student teacher from Africa, and was promptly sent to Presswoods study. I was shaking like a leaf, as we all know how a cane can get the old adrenaline going! Once inside his study, he told me to bend down across his desk and I waited for the familiar twang of the rod. When it came, I initially wondered why I had heard it but didn't feel anything. Was I immune? No, Dr. Presswood dutifully whacked his chair cushion six times, told me to look terrified and hurt, then go back to my class. What a great man he was. I am recalling this story for the very first time by the way, and I know that he would forgive me for spillimg the beans so many years later, if her were still with us. Is there anyone out there who attended the school at the same time and perhaps has some photos - I unfortunately do not have any. Hope to hear from some of you soon, Colin.

Attended the school 1953-1958, though not very often in the latter years. This entry prompted by the mention of Mr.Semmons, who was good for an afternoon off, when Terry Rother, and I would pop over to Battersea Bridge Road to feed his cat! Mr.Harris who ignored you mid morning in Batterseaq Park. Mr. Gutteridge ? stands out for his "fun" maths lessons, Connie for trying to get me into Latin, and Doc Cavell for an introduction to the manufacture of things that go bang. Does anyone remember the succession of Physics masters, each one nuttier than the last. There also seemed to be a number of masters who could be easily diverted, I cant remember his name but one elderly maths master could help pass a hot summers afternoonm, with guess a pictogram, for some strange reason one of a Christmas Pudding the clue for Nuneaton, sticks in my mind. What a waffle thats the problem with retirement.

I joined in 1949 and fled in 1956. My first form master was State (who was generally disliked) and, in the second form, Cox ("When I was in Barbados etc....) who was a popular eccentric. In the third form it was Laurenson ("Lulu"), a likeable Geordie; in the fourth Wadsworth ("Errol") whose wife (Louise) was the art mistress; in the fifth Jackson (inevitably "Jacko"); and in the 6th, Osbourne (Ozzy) who, I understand, composed the lyrics to the school song. My first Headmaster was Wharton (Jim) and the second Presswood ("Charlie", so called because, one evening after a school play performance, a parent asked him "Oy Charlie where's the bog?" This was commemorated when Semmons, the music master/organist, played variations on "Charlie is my darling" in the run up to morning assembly ~ for which, I gather, he was taken to task). With reference to Don Piears' note, the Abadi brothers, Maurice and Selim, who both spoke fluent French and didn't look like brothers at all, were Egyptian. I had heard that John Robertson was in Customs & Excise but we never met there.

Found this place through the Friends Reunited website. So this is where you're hiding!. Was at 'Sinjuns' from 73-77 when I was mercilessly taken away from London to the North for some ridiculous reason, (thx ma + pa). I have a couple of memories, remember Miss Anacich? I was sitting watching her boobs bouncing around, I wasn't interested in the lesson (hardly ever was), then found my self saying out loud, "Giz a Flash". I was stunned, seemed everyone else was too, no one said a word and strangely Anacich didn't either. An abiding memory from the showers, does Stuart Price read this stuff?. Anyway Stuart got a reputation on being umm, particularly well hung. What we didn't know at the time, Stuart was parading a hard on after the showers. What was all that about Stu?. Totally unconnected, I heard all about Ackers, didn't Paul Riley have an absolute tirade at him at some time?, whatever happened to Paul? I saw Suhail Akhtar, almost 30 years ago now, after I came back to London, haven't seen him post on here. He around anywhere anyone knows about? I've read the posts here, I can't believe what you did to old salted peanut, maybe GB just didn't have a sense of humour?. I missed the toilet world record attempt, not sure I even heard about it. Fritz, Crook, Smoothy Steve Sparrow, DePiro... lots of memories, not all good, but still, made me smile. Hope you're all well. Maybe see ya some time. Take Care. Dennis

I was at Sinjuns from 1959 - 1964, under the"reign" of Mr Presswood ? Fellow pupils I can remember are Steve Wooldridge,Alan Badcock, Graham Welch, Brian Weedon, Nasim Tariq, John Elias, Barry Sullivan to name a few. Teachers were "Dolly" Rhodes, "Fritz" Taylor, Mr Semmonds (?), Mr Lydon, Ducket,Mr Smith - that's all at the moment. I left in 1964 and started with an Insurance company, left after 2 years for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and finally, joined the London Fire Brigade in 1968, until I was medically retired in 1993. I am approaching the great 60, with a lovely wife of 38 years, a lovely daughter who is married, and 5 months ago, presented us with our first grandchild, who is a handsome little boy called Ethan.I happened across this sight via Google - what a surprise when reading the guestbook to see some names I can actually remember !! And many others. Teachers include JD Roberts, RA Walker, Fritz Taylor, Scruff Powsland, Arthur DeCaux, Trogg Walker, DET, Duckett, Cox (geography). Two vivid memories, both concerning young Angus MacKay: him turning up for his first day in shorts! And one day the other geography teacher, I forget his name, said 'Mackay, would you do me a favour?', 'Yes sir, what is it', 'Would you f**k off to another school please?'. Happy days mostly. I remember you Dave Piotrowski, your skills in mimicking teachers voices had me in stiches on many occasions. I was in the same year (and many classes) as your younger brother Michael, and often heard you taking the pee out of Fritz or others with your mates in the corridors. How is Michael btw? Have to say I completely agree with you regarding the childish comments on here at times. It spoils it for the rest of us. Hello to anyone who remembers me.

Well, I remember The Rev. Blackburn was known as Albert Hall... and I remember The Great Escape from Hurlingham Sports Day... but it does not really seem to add up to much considering it was six precious years of my life. What was the caretaker Mr. Tanner's assistant called? (that is a comment on how we were expected to behave - we called him "Tanner" and that was thought to be acceptable !!!)

It never ceases to amaze me, the people that add and read this guestbook must be 40 plus? I read this probably once every 3 to 6 months just to see if any of the old names crop up, and quite honestly, I know we used to get up to some pathetic childest things, and got the cane for many times, but some of you really do need to get out in the big wide world and grow up fast. Do you not bore yourself with this rubbish?I'm sure you lot will want to tell me to bugger off, or something stronger, however why don't you put that energy into creating your own website - you could call it letsactourfingshoesize.com and you can then type rubbish all day and you won't get moany gits like me on your back. Kind Regards, dp

I look at this site once every approx 6 months. It never ceases to amaze me of the immature comments received on a regular basis. If you are looking at this site you are probably at least 40, if it's you, start acting your age NOW! If you haven't got a serious comment don't bother saying anything on this site because we don't want to read your rubbish anymore.(I'm sure I will get a reply from those of you that disagree.) If you actually went to Sinjuns and are proud of that, why not make some comments about your time at the school. If you didn't go to the school go away and make your comments where we can't read them because they are boring. I've got off my soap box now see you in approx 6 months?

Whose going to Wembley? I've block booked Alisan www.alisan.co.uk a restaurant client of mine in Wembley. Good place. Michelin-starred chef, the works. It's only a long throw from the new stadium. We already got a fair few old sinjuns coming and it would be great to have a few more. It's £65+VAT inc drinks, celebrity guests, etc. If you can't afford that to witness the third leg of an historic quadruple- then you've wasted a grammar school education. Anyone unable to get a ticket can always watch the game on the screens in the bar. There should be a couple of match tickets to raffle on the day, and I'll tell the touts to bring any of their excess stock at 2.55.

I don't know if anybody out there remembers me. I was in Spencer House between 1953 and 1959. Although I didn't enjoy school all that much I did enjoy being in the CCF and played the bugle. I've been in the travel industry for most of my life - living in the US for 9 years and Australia for 4. I have been self employed (still am) and specialise in the conferences/incentives/events side of the business as a freelancer. I am married with a son, stepsons and grandsons. I attended Sinjuns shortly after the school returned to Battersea from Godalming after the war. I left in July 1954. I was a proud member of Grandison House and was also part of the swimming team during my latter years. Schoolmates who I remember are Tony Hunt, John Wolstencroft, and Julian Chilvers. I took my entrance exam with Dr. Band and the Head Master's name, I believe, was Frank Smallwood who of course, was known as Mr. Chips. If anyone from my era reads this I would love to hear from you. I returned to London for 16 months 1985/6 and it was during this time, I believe, that the school was closed But I did have the opportunity to walk past the front of the school with my wife and two of my daughters before the closure.

About 3 years ago I contacted Kevin England and Neil Storer letting them know that I had a number of copies of The Sinjun, offering them ready scanned for inclusion on the website as per the plea for back issues. 3 years and 1 heart transplant later and I have seen no sign of them appearing on the website. So since life is all too short and I don't plan on waiting for any more organs to be exchanged, I have decided to put these issues on the web myself. For anyone who is interested, there are 10 editions of The Sinjun covering the years 1954-1960 [minus 1959] on-line at the following address: http://www.sinjuns.racher.co.uk/SinjunsIndex.htm If I find the 1959 issues, I shall put those on too. I was interested to find the entry by Mick Parker in the Gazette since he was not only in my year but in my form. I don't recall using first names, but I recall those he mentioned. Josh Reynolds came to Sinjuns because they threw him out of Battersea Grammar - at Sinjuns he was always in hot water because he insisted on using the front door of the school, which was forbidden, and always referred to the caretaker, Mr. Tanner as 'Bob', which raised 'Bob's' hackles somewhat. I rmember Clark, a brilliant lad who was always vying with MacNamara for top place, Davidge was always third. Willy Wall had a twin and both were trouble, Willy was in the 'A' stream to separate him from his brother. I met Thurgood later in the City when I briefly worked for Legal & General. It was Shackleford (not Shackleton, a tall blond bloke, Lydiard & a good footballer. Abadi & his brother were Egyptians & paid to attend Sinjuns, so I believe. I remember Dave Price (he went on to teach Russian) and George Bryan, my best friend at school. Any news? It was Connie Highton (now sadly deceased & a real lady) and Alfie Stripp did have a pseudonym, which he declared himself in the school magazine - Curby Grip, the Man With the Twisted Lip. He did have an unnatural curl to his lip! His boss was Jacko Jackson. No-one has mentioned 'Barbados Bill' Cox & his famous story of the native who urinated in an electolitic tank & was shaken by the experience. I didn't know Bill Stacey was a Yank, I thought he was from the West Country.I have seen, once, J.D.Roberts (Robbo) who joined the Customs & Excise & was inspecting the office in Wandsworth in which I worked. He was Captain of Soccer at the school, later played for Corinthian Casuals (when they were good) & became Captain of the England Amateurs, I think. A great bloke with a sense of humour and boundless energy on the pitch. Good at fives, too. I have so many memories and I wonder why, because I didn't spend my whole life there, yet can't remember some of the highlights of my working life. Strange. I remember a lot more, a veritable font of knowledge (if not wisdom) and what I don't know, my brother will. I had two at Sinjuns: Tony, two years above and Derek, about the same below. Don Piears

Hi there to all Sinjuns from my days there in 56 to 60. I was in the mass exodus from Riversdale to Sinjuns when about 18 of us got in somehow. Many good memories of nights in Battersea with Zombie,Gherkin,Sharp Dizzy,Noyes etc. Also hilarious times in the CCf when someone left one up the spout and almost blew Dixon's head off;the escape from hut 29. Who put the sandwich on Algies head? Where are all the comments from the Riversdale boys-do any of them remember Ron Batty or better still his daughter Anita??!!! Loook forward to hearing from some of you sad old gits - were we really that young ? Now living in Cornwall looking out to Fraggle Rock (St Anthony's lighthouse) ps reading about famous old boys add Johnny Kidd to that list

Was at School 1959 -1965 -left before A-Levels on spur of the moment at Christmas. Whilst playing Jelly Roll Morton in the Great Hall and bunking off English, RE Walker swept in and I had no excuse ready and so managed to blurt out "I'm leaving at the end of term, sir". And so I left! Anyway got my Alevels and degree and job quals etc in due course and now come full circle to really enjoy the annual reunion dinner in the Autumn at the School. Why not join us?

Hi there all who remember me. I was at SWSJ from 1974 to 1981 in LT before the shadow of William Blake and comprehensive-ism crossed our paths. What a f**ked-up decision that was. Hope that you captains of industry are in good health as well as the rest of you mere mortals. I tried a while back to get some my contemporaries together for some reunion-type events but I was just totally overwhelmed by the apathy I received in response. Should I try again? I'd like to, just to see how bald and fat most of us have become (note the use of the word 'us'). Come on you guys who started in '74 - respond here, or, better yet, send me an e-mail to the address supplied. You know it makes sense! BY the way, FYI, I gave up real work 5 years ago in order to become a novelist. Hands up those who've read one and can tell me the pseudonym I use. (Well you didn't think I'd use my REAL name did you?) Anyway, best wishes to all.

Memories of Sinjuns 73-80 Chemistry - Mr Beanland grabbing a test tube of Xylene I was warming gently over a yellow bunsen flame and uttering the words 'Don't tickle it Uttley !' accompanied by him increasing the bunsen to full power.....Flames licked across the bench as the now rather excited Xylene made a run for it ! On another occasion, nearly blowing him self up when the Thermite reaction didn't react.....until he went back to investigate why things weren't working....and discovered that they were !

The tuck shop - A fellow first year stood outside the tuck shop with a can of coke in hand. Previous cans having been taken from him by 'older boys'. The next older boy you tried this found himself slurping not on coke but either cold gravy or piss.....memory fails me as to exactly which it was, but I sure the consumer can still remember the taste !

Music - Sat in JPW's class writing sleeve notes which he dictated, thinking...isn't this what a bloody photcopier is for !

Maths - Chas Barrett, Ken Duckett and Ratna Alexander....Thanks to your excellent teaching, Maths was the only thing I found a doddle in further education.

Biology - How did anyone allow Ackers to teach young boys....still, the education system is still struggling with that one 30 years later !

Ian Byles and his EDP Wasp synthesizer gurgling away from a black plastic bag during assembly.

CSE French exam and Bob Taylor miming the opening of an umbrella as he dictated the French passage we were required to translate.....presumably without the help of visuals !

Hi David, I share your frustration at the spammers, they drive me nuts! Typically I have to clean out over 50 spam entries a day from the guestbook, but last week it went crazy and I am now having to clean out 100+ entries a day. I am looking for a guestbook that when you post messages they have to be approved before they appear so this should help. Regards, Neil Storer

My Old School site that was set up so well is now turning into a spammers paradise. Is there no Gatekeeper (I hesitate to say Prefect) who can clean it up and keep it that way. If someone will give me the authority/key I will volunteer.

Browsing the net ,entered our founders name and up came the schools web site. I was evacuated to Hove in Sept 1939 ,just settled down when in the post a letter saying I had been awarded a Junior County Scholarship so up bags with my mother and sister to Godalming, regretably never to attend the school in Battersea (but at least I can say I attended Charterhouse.

I can remember a few masters names - the Head was J.E.Taylor - needless to say nicknamed JET, the latin master named Band - obviously Bandy - he would walk up and down between the desks banging on each one with a heavy ruler as we declined amo amas amant. The favourite was the maths master A G Strip who when pleased with the progress of the lesson would treat us to a five minute reading from Jerome K Jerome's Three Men in a Boat.

Saturday morning was prancing around in a cadet uniform with a modified .22 rifle at the Charterhouse Armory. Great Days

Hi,I am an old Sinjun from the Battersea days.

What a wonderful thing the net is! I found your site just by accident.

My name is Denis Charles Parkins Gibbs, and I won a scholarship to go to Sinjuns in 1928. I stayed at Sinjuns until I matriculated in 1933. Then Higher Schools Cert in 1934. My name should be on the old Roll of Honour Boards - if it still exists.

Of course a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, incluiding the war, when we seemed to lose touch with almost everybody. I won't bore you with what happened after the war, even though it was extremely interesting at the time. Now I am 88, still fit as a fiddle, and still going strong. I lost my wife nearly 4 years ago - we had been married 60 years, and have our letter from the Queen of England! You will probably find my website of interest - http://www.liquid-leak.com

Incidentally the Head in my early days was a Mr Taylor, and he was suceeded by his son sometime about 1930.

Regards

Denis Gibbs

Am writing regarding my Father in Law, William George Henry Jacobs, who attended Sinjuns in the 1920s. Since finding your web site and ordering the old boys' tie he has worn it with pride and has enjoyed the newsletters, which he has recieved.

However, I am sorry to tell you that he passed away on 1st January 2006 at 1am at the age of 93. He was always very proud that he had been at St Walter St John School and often told us tales about his antics.

Looks like I am the first guest in 2006. About time I got my name on here since no-one else has mentioned me! I was a GB from `76 to `80 and was one of those who always did their homework but still got into some scrapes like when trying to blow up the fives court and the caretaker with John Jenkins.

This may be late notice but I am meeting up with John J, Little Dave Bunting, Doggie Dave Uttley, Ben Rich, Suhail Akhtar, and Ian Kick, this Friday 6 January at the Woodman around 7pm for "our" annual reunion. If anyone does see this and wants to meet up for a beer, a piss take, a curry, and a walk down memory lane then drop me a line.

Cheers to all the Old Boys and if Vic Garrick sees this and wants us to help liven up the next OBA reunion then get in touch!!
