LT 1970-1975 Have just been told about this site and was amazed to see so many names from the past. The were two Steve Wells in this year, one playted the flute, I was the other one! I am still in contact with Phil Moore and Dave Hampton and will pass on details of this site too each of them. Dave Norman, have you ever thought about a film of your life? I always remember sitting in Maths class one day with Charlie Barrett scribbling away on the blackboard when, from the back of the class came a ball crashing on the blackboard, just missing Charlie barrett. I can remember his screaming in your direction and you trying to convince him the ball came through the window. It was closed! I can't say I'm surprised about your life, but great to hear your enjoying it. What about the other hooligans? Where are McKenzie, Penfold, Oliver and co. What happened to Hudson (can't remember first name, but wrote T.Rex and Roxy Music all over the place). What about the teachers; McCarthy (Geog), Farrow(Physics); Smithy (TD/Woodwork). Where are they now, feet up in some cosy place?

Found site through Friend Reunited. Attended Sinjuns between 1970 and 1975. Moved to Norfolk in 1987 and hadn't been to Battersea for more than 20 years. Parked outside last month when I travelled down to watch the Blues beat Ipswich. Horrified to find that Sinjuns is now something else but relieved that outwardly has not changed at all. Found battersea Church but couldn't find Devonshire House. Is it still there? The Old Swan where we used to look for jetsom on the foreshore has gone and is now some swanky apartments. Amased at the transformation in the area. "Memories like the corners of my mind" (Barbara Striesland in the background). Best wishes to anyone who remembers me - Would like to hear from Tom Williams, Mark Chadwick, Sheriff. (I've still got Tim Arrowsmiths Sheldon Book of Verse!) Kim

I have been reading and re-reading the entries from the 1973-78 intake. Yes (Ecky) still lives. Terry Mahony you had me in stitches especially with the Science Block! How many you can get in a bog story! Yep I was there when Fritz turned up with his trusty slipper. To confirm, it was me on the receiving end when Phil Goodson decided to do his swallow dive out of the 1st floor window. I remember he was walking around with a fractured ankle for two weeks after being given the all clear at the local hospital. I ended up with 3 stitches! Does anyone remember Stephen Beames (Beano) he was the Sinjun's open champion for eating roast potatoes, I think he got to somewhere in the 20's before turning a strange colour. I also remember him getting knocked down by a Police car right outside school, he was ok but the copper was shaking like a leaf and practically arrested Beano in an attempt to make him go to A&E for a check-up. Good to see some old names, Geoff Hopkins, long time no see hope you're doing well. Jon Rushworth vaguely remember going with you and Phil Goodson and Lloyd Ridgway? to Arsenal, Boxing Day 197? when Sinjuns' took the North Bank! I think the mighty Blues lost 3-0 Wish all the 73-78 crew a happy New Year perhaps catch up with you all at the next reunion.

I,ve found a picture of the 1977 Basketball team, members included Paul Johanson, Chris Young, Gary Muchmore, Nick Diametis etc..We were a top team played 26 lost 24 won 2 (Emanuel failed to show up twice!!)I will scan the photo into the site-check out those hair cuts. Gentlemen the name of the American Latin teacher was Vesta Cohee from Indanapolis ( I think that the spelling is correct ). Reading the entries in the guest book bring back many pleasant memories. another does anyone remember!! I started '65. Does anyone remember the flats behind the playground where there were a couple of girls who used to hang out of a window and lure us up to "see" them.One day their mother came home & caught us there. We all hid under beads and in cupboards. She went to the headmaster next day to complain. At the next assembly he asked for the boys concerned to own up. Needless to say no response!!!!

Sinjuns 69-75 I was very surprised when Gary Williams phoned me to see if I was interested in a reunion and even more surprised to find out that a Sinjuns website existed. And those names in the guest book! Here are a few questions for you what happened to Mick Heath and Simon Robinson? Did Neil George become the greatest guitar player in the world? What about Jamie Glass? Reading through the guest book brought back many memories. Remember Jimmy Gibb turning all the furniture upside down in a bid to drive his French teacher mad?! Greenup! So accurate with his black board rubber (throwing it)! Thanks for setting this site up.

Attended 1945-1952, just after the school returned from its war-time period in Godalming. I have lived in New Zealand since 1970; now retired. Sad to read that the School has closed; now a private prep-school. Greetings to all Sinjuns!

Attended SINJUNS 57 to 59 when family immigrated to the United States. Went to Riversdale primary school from 54 to 57. I recall the interview for admission with Dr. Presswood and how the return address on the envelope was an unbeknownst test I recall the boxing in the gym. The chess team and how late we would get back. The underground workers strike and seeking alternate transport including British Rail if that's what it was called then. Of course, it would have been easier just to walk to the school than all the finagling around. I also remember the urgency to get out of shorts and into long pants. I was dismissed from music due to "weak pitch". I still remember woodwork. Talk about a well rounded education. I was in charge of the bulletin board. How proud I was. Recently I saw a photograph of the prefects and it all came back to me. I rather regret that I left the Union Jack because I had a wonderful time in my five year stay in London. My daughter went to summer school in London three years ago and I visited London for the first time since 59. How things have changed. I'm glad that the buildings are still in use. At last! somebody else from the intake of 69. Have you seen how many names there are on that "other" site. I recognise most of those names from my brother's year 73. Nice to see you're all alive and kicking. I have got 2ndXI team photo from the tour to the IOW in 74? Maurice Blackburn,Jimmy Gibb, Paul Winstanley, Sebastian Batson,? Jeff Burgess, Kevin Taylor, Steve Dempsey, Peter Weeks, John Frawley and Graham Granville and a couple of others whose names I don't remember. When I've got some time I'll try and work out how to post it on this site. For your information the OBA reunion dinner at the school was quite a good crack (my first time this year) I went along with Graham Smith, amazing how all the memories come flooding back and don't! Further to the recent reunion at the Windsor Castle at Clapham Jct. It was a particularly poignant venue for me and Steve Begley because that the pub where he and I used to have a few snifters on a Thursday lunchtime before we traipsed up Lavender Hill to the Battersea Art's Centre for an afternoon life class with Roger Elsgood and a model who I used see stark naked every week for the best part of a year but can't remember her name? Fellow Art student Dominic Cortizo nearly got slapped by her one week when he tried to get familiar and introduce himself to her during the half-time tea break. He had got the wrong end of the stick when he earlier overheard me and Steve tell someone that 'we love Art on Thursdays because we get to see Fanny!" Anyway, back to the original story.... one day we had more than one too many in the Windsor Castle and during the class that followed, Steve knocked a pot of paint all over his picture that was stretched out in front of him. All the colours ran into each other and the whole thing looked like a big psychedelic puddle on floor, nothing like the model in front of him. Hiccupping and trying not to be sick, Steve desperately tried to mop some of the mess and eventually dried most of up when Elsgood turned and walked over to him. "Stop your work everyone and gather round over here now!" he demanded. (Even the model wandered over). Steve with his eyes glazed over, looked up at Elsgood like an old labrador looks up at a vet awaiting a lethal injection. And just as I was thinking that it was a bit cruel of Elsgood to humiliate Steve over the painting in front of the whole class before eventually expelling him for being pissed, he then proclaimed.... "This is fantastic, this is what I'm looking for. It's dynamic! It's got depth! It's got soul! It's got this and that, etc, etc..." It was shite, that's what it was! How Steve got away with that I'll never know. From that day on he never painted while sober again and became Roger Elsgood's favourite pupil. My Art O-level certificate probably still lies discarded in the loft of my old house in Fulham, having been made meaningless by the events of that day. One week when the usual model didn't show up he was so drunk that posed nude for the class which included sixth form girls from Battersea County and Notre Dame! Meanwhile, I continued to paint and draw like an old master and was accused of being 'too mainstream', 'lacking creativity' and 'being unimaginative'. Steve on the other hand spent the following weeks alternating between throwing up, sneezing, urinating, and defecating on various canvasses and remained Elsgood's prodigy!

John Rushworth's comment below brings memories of Elwyn Dawkins flooding back - apart from his Yellow FS1-E DX (the only one in the row with the front disk brake!) who remembers the end-of-term review in 1977 where an impromptu group was formed that week with little or no rehearsal - Elwyn said he'd play drums and no-one was prepared to argue... Expecting fireworks, we turned up, played Free's "Allright now" and he was brilliant!! We played some other stuff as well but I can't remember what - can anyone else?

I had the shock of my life when I came across this site and found you all. I haven't seen or spoken to any of you since I left school in 1975 at the ripe age of 16 to enter the Hairdressing industry. I'm now older, wiser and with far less hair but I often think back to the times at Sinjuns and a few old mates (Steve W, Jack R, Rob P, Bill B, Aamir Z, Robert E and the rest of you horrible people from LT. Howard Taylor, where were you on Friday (30/11). It would have been good to see you. Seeing your name reminded me of the school trip to Swanage. Do you remember Tony Anderson ? He used to wait for his fellow colleagues to fall asleep in the dormitory that we all shared, and than proceed to find a victim. On this particular occasion you were that victim. He then tried to set your hair alight, but fortunately the burning smell provoked a cough and splutter from Patrick Lonegan who was on the top bunk. Tony panicked and ran back to his bed, leaving your hair in place albeight a little singed. Happy times.......

Hi there. Attended 71-78. Have eventually got round to visiting the site after many recommendations from Tony Francis, Gary Jenkins & Mark Dennis. Just spent an hour reading and bringing back memories. I remember our first day. We were all taken into the gym and sorted into the three forms BB, GB & LT (not quite as unusual as the sorting in Harry Potter but just as traumatic). Sods law that the 3 of us who came from the same Primary School Ian Ross & Paul Barnes were all put into seperate forms. Was at the 1st 71-78 reunion in early nov but only 3 of us from LT (me, nick mann & nick reeves), sorry I missed you Ed (Higgins) and Anthony (Jack) Russell. I was at Sinjuns between 1970 to 1977 and for all my sins Iam now an accountant.I have kept in regular touch with 4-5 school friends since leaving, and my thanks to Gary Jenkins ,who called me tonight about this website.A few of us visited the school again in Jan 00 after 25 years and it was something! Lloyd Ridgeway told me about this site, it's great to see some familiar names and to read the old stories (Terry - you could always tell a good yarn mate!)The tale which is still told to a disbelieving audience today is when Elwin Dawkins (Sorry about this Elwin) offered to fight the entire 4th year! As I turned the corner to the 5's court all hell at let loose with seemingly 100's of 1st & 2nd years mauling each other to get a better veiw of what was taking place inside. As I appeared at the door I will never forget the look on Dave Piertroski and Tony Philpot's faces(these were the only 2 4th formers to take up the challenge) they slowly shuffled around Dawkins like boys that had slipped and landed in the bear cage,eyes fixed on their would be predator. "You coming in John?" "err,I'm err" before I could answer the bell rang & back to class we went making plans for retribution after school. The meet was Notrianis cafe in the High St where the legions of the mighty 4th form amassed (Terry Mahoney, Victor Garrick, Steve Price, Darryl Turner ,Dean Elliott, Tony Philpot) and waited ... Price was on look out "He's coming" said steve shaking & panting, we all looked at each other in turn, what do we do? without a word we simultaneously ducked under the tables and hid! Dawkins passed and we were safe. Then suddenly there was a strange rallying of the troops & with renewed bravery we marched out, by the time we arrived at the bus stop Dawkins was on the bus, we gestured and screamed at him telling him how lucky he was to be on the bus in safety - Showing no emotion he slowly got up and pressed the emergency button on the door and got off! Ive had better days, we scattered and made half hearted attempts at being brave but eventually Dawkins got bored and got another bus and went home as we did with our tails between our legs worrying about the next day and having to face the man mountain again. (On another occasion Dawkins managed to persuade me that his Grandmother could pick up Capital Radio on her gold tooth - but thats another story). Sorry if that was a bit long winded but I was on a roll!! hope to meet up with some of you boyz soon. Cheers

I thought all contact had been lost with the "Lockites" contingent at Godalming. I was delighted to see from the Guest Book that at least Rex Priddy has surfaced! Having just made my first post on here after just finding the site I feel like I have just had a memory injection!!.Some other memories coming through now: Freda in the Tuck Shop, as I remember a benevolent grey hair lady with never a cross word, (The Tuck Shop, aka the wooden shed in the corner of the Quad. Break times cakes,'long un's'(iced buns),and at lunchtime the usual array of sweets(Mars Bars were 6d at the time).The toilets at the back of the Music Room, approached from the rear of the Stage, then down the steps, perfect for that lunchtime 'drag'.Always remember dispensation for members of the Choir to be able to float around that area during lunch break.And talking of the Choir, it would be good to know what happened to PAUL JONES, in the period 64 to 69, then the head treble of the choir, a lad with perfect pitch, and Mr Semmons' pride and joy. And remember Mr Semmons either on the Grand Piano in the Hall or on the Organ, a lit Hamlet cigar perched on the edge of his lips at all times, ash just waiting to drop, looking out over his half moon specs' Well back to the memory injections and looking forward to seeing what other memories rear their heads.Happy Days!!

Great site - brings back memories of Trogg, Dolly, Chalky White (Biology), and of course the unforgetable Acker and John Short whose demise I noted. I couldnt wait to get out when I was there and make my way in the big world outside, but looking back they were good times. An absolute treat to come across this site and see the old building in the photo section.Having left in the 1970's period my strongest teacher memory must be TROGG ,for history. Staff Nicknames...Richard Cousins was called "Paulus" after Paulus the Gnome, a character in a cartoon who had a similar beard. Paul Meadon was also called "Cozy" after the drummer Cozy powell, following a school production in which he did an imitation of Animal, the drummer from the muppets. Not sure he was meant to be doing that though!

Hello. I have just discovered this site through friends re-united. I was at the school from 1953 to 1961. I have worked as an airline pilot for the last 40years. I am trying to contact Eddie (E.C.Bell) and Dennis Giles, who were both friends and l lost contact with them a very long time ago. You may not have heard that Paul Whitmore (Mr.P.C.Whitmore) who taught French and set up the RAF section of the CCF died last March. An inspirational teacher and a great friend and mentor to me, at least.

Does anybody remember returning after the holidays to find all the wooden floors in the Chemistry labs undulating like an LSD induced sea? It was because they had laid new parquet flooring that had warped in the fierce summer heat of that hellish greenhouse. I have fond memories of leaving the gas taps on at the end of every lesson in the faint hope that one day Mr Ackers would take up smoking and light up in break time. Sadly it never happened, but then time caught up with him in the end. I remember failed chemical experiments being deposited in the tropical fish tank. Poor fish. Alas not the eco-friendly chaps we have hopefully become now. Sorry to hear some of the bickering in this wonderful Guest book. Let’s be nice to each other. It’s more fun. Cheers all.

Just read Ed's comments below. Sorry you missed us mate. We were all stood by the entrance inside the station by the top of the escalator that came up from the concourse. In fact I was mistaken for "door security" at one stage (should have tried to charge admission). Have we all changed that much that you did not recognise any of the old gits stood by the door? Gutted that anybody made a journey and failed to meet anyone. Hopefully we can all get together next time. Let's hope that something can be arranged very soon.

The 71-78 reunion was a bloody disaster for anyone who wasn't there on time. I got there about 8.30, spent way too long looking for anyone familiar and not deaf, left, came back, looked again, asked the bar staff (who knew nothing about it0, went to the other Wetherspoons, looked agin, gave up and went home. Next time - (a) don't do it at or very near a mainline station (it will have way too many people in it), (b) if plans change, leave a message with bar staff and (c) give everyone a contact number just in case. To say I was pissed off (having travelled halfway across London) is a bit of an understatement.

Having read all the notes on "both" last friday's reunions it was good to see that a sense of humour is starting to emerge from the mess. For those that met old friends at both pubs, great. For those that had a wasted journey, don't give up as plans are being put together already for the next bash. With hindsight, things could have run more smoothly and NEXT time they will. Various dates, times and venues are already being discussed. I would like to arrange another do before xmas and must admit I think Central London is probably an easier venue to get to than most. However, let's kick some ideas about before a decision is reached. On a personal note, I wished I could have been in 2 places at once last friday and would ask anyone who I did not get to meet to email me direct. Regards to all. Tony

Was Friday's night reunion surreal or what? It could have been a scene from a Paul Lawford film! Had a drink in nearby pub to meet Gary Watkins. Heard 'big bang' at about 7.30 pm, took no notice. Left pub at approx 7.45 to go over to Wetherspoon's in the station, only to find station closed. Eventually let in about 8.05, Wetherspoon's still not open. Queued outside with about 150 deaf people (obviously a regular meeting place for them because when the place eventually opened about 8.15 the staff weren't phased and even demonstrated an understanding of sign language (or was it 'tic-tac'). It did make identifying Sinjuns very easy though. Basically everybody without an hearing aid was an 'old boy'. Good job Nobby Norman didn't go, he would have been as confused as hell! Those listed below (plus Gary Watkins, Vic Garrick, Steve Price, Darryl Turner and me) award yourselves an "A+.... Excellent effort" for attending despite the difficulties. Those who were there early but did not come back when the station reopened.... "C- Good early promise but must try harder". Those of you who didn't bother.... "E- Poor effort." It was good to see all of you on Friday. Hope to see you again sometime.

Just to set the record straight, I didn't attend both pubs on Friday night's 71-78 reunion and would be interested to find out who was impersonating me! I arrived at the Victoria Station Wetherspoons at around 8.30 and there was no indication of the problems others had experienced and after fighting my way through the hundreds of deaf people met up with a few old boys including Tony Bridgeman, Adrian Fisher, Dave Poderick, Nick Knight and Paul Barnett. There were others from different years including Gary Wakeling - is he really in the porn industry? Paul Ormesher and Tony Clayton turned up later and between the different groups from varying years we enjoyed recounting old times. I did not however sneak off to the other pub without telling anyone and meet up with the likes of Tony Francis and Howard Taylor although I would have loved to have seen them and the many other names I recognise. So if anyone knows who it was pretending to be me then let me know! On a serious note, I would be keen to attend another reunion although Battersea would not be ideal - somewhere more central, away from a mainline station if preferred, would be my choice and I hope that we can all manage to get to the same point at an agreed time in the near future. It would be good to see other old friends like Perry Barnes, Duncan Brett, Simon Amos etc. etc. if they can make it.

We turned up at the station and by 7.45 it had been evacuated due to a bomb alert...I reckon Simon Amos set off the fire alarm again! About 11 of us ended up at a pub a way away from the station, where we stayed until more or less closing time as we were told that the station had not re-opened. the role call was: Howell, Gale, Wildman, Stockton, Francis, Webb, Russell, Steve and Gavin Brooker,Taylor (Howard not Bob!), Mann and another chinese guy who wasn`t in our year but runs a restraunt in Gerrard Street that the whole Sinjuns population is apparently welcome to visit! I`m gutted that we didn`t all meet up and there are clearly some very upset people out there who may have travelled quite a distance. We want to do it again...maybe in Battersea, possibly at the Woodman/Original Woodman/Castle? What do you all think? Contact me if you like at work...0207 695 2555. Greetings from Somerset from the third longest serving Sinjun - 1945-1956 - now currently semi-retired-doing bar work and the lone Liberal Democrat District Councillor - West Somerset. At least 4 Sinjuns in the area - Geoffrey Bannister, Tony Hunt, ...Best and myself. Attended 2000 dinner much nostalgia - some interesting perceptions - I guess my views have moved steadly leftwards as the years go by ! I enjoyed the history of the school - will become a very useful intro to history of education - I felt much was missed !

Had a fantastic re-union night at a Wimbledon pub with Roy Eddy, Rich Bennett, Steve Guyon, Chris Borasinski, Steve Daley, Kevin Carson and Peter Chapman. Most of us had not seen each other since we left Sinjuns in 1973. We talked and laughed non stop about the characters and stories from 1966 to 1973. Kevin could even remember the entire 1A register! ..Aplin, Bagwell, Borasinski, Brookes, etc. Well, thanks lads, I have not enjoyed myself so much for a long time and certainly worth the trip from Cornwall to Wimbledon. I will try and get the photos to you somehow. The next time there will be a lot more there. Come on Mumford, Spevock, Osbourne, and any others, we must have loads more memories to unload. All the best to you all. PS. Can Paul Lawford have his own personal guest book?

Period 73 – 78. The water bomb that we had known and loved to lob had lost its edge in the urban punk infected modern world into which we had been dumped. Something new was required. New weapons of destruction had to be developed. The most ingenious psychopaths amongst us went to hermit away in our workshops filled with stolen chemicals and sharp things from all the school departments. After many days off sick we emerged with some of the following. The most powerful was the elastic band catapult. This was not new of course, but the ammunition was deadly the deadly steel staple. If you were unfortunate enough to get hit you would be left with two puncture marks as if inflicted by a crazed mini-vampire. On our away from school trips to historic sites, no pigeon or pensioner would be left unscathed. Then came, thanks to possibly, Tim France, and maybe David Noyce, and allegedly myself, the medical syringe! No needles thank Christ. We would fill these with water and shoot the blackboard or anything else or anybody we hated. If the grudge was great then ink would be used. Then came the peashooter/biro. Paper would be chewed then shot through the tube at the ceiling; the accumulated mash would form hardened papier-mâché stalactites that hung majestically for years. Then one day a stoke of genius came in shape of the CONDOM. They could be filled with huge amounts of water and dropped from high places or thrown long distances with shattering effect. They could be stretched over doorknobs. I did Crooks. Lighter fuel was next but self-injury was all to often the result. I look back at all this in with sheer horror, which then gives way to a half smile. We were just kids after all. However, if we could have produced Anthrax we probably would have used it.

Great to see Geoff Hopkins on board! Another member of what Brian Williams said was the best school team he'd ever seen...... Mahoney, Tella, Atkinson, Gale, Price (Stu and Steve), Begley, Mehmet, Hopkins, Elliott, Copeland, Stephenson, Watkins, Wheatley, Diamantis, Hatt (when I couldn't get out of bed!) and later on, Chris Young. No wonder we rarely lost - we had 17 players on the pitch, who all went home in Pete Begley's Rover! What a team, what a car! Our first team never ever lost a game at home throughout our whole school career. Great days, hmmmmm, young boys, jumpers for goalposts, marvellous, eh! Anyway, talking of the FRENS, I must correct Paul Barnett's recollection of some weeks ago when he said that his cousin, the sleek-necked Phil Goodson, fell through one of those skylight roof windows by the cloakroom, landing on some first formers. I am sure that he actually fell on his best friend, Neil Eccleston. A classic case Necky on your Ecky! For those Swanage field-trippers circa 1976, I was down there last year and can confirm that the borstal that we stayed in is still there as well as The Black Swan and The White Swans pubs. Who remembers, when about a dozen of us bunked out to go to a disco only to be confronted by about 40 local inbred kids who wanted a ruck, or was it to pinch our double-breasted jackets and high-waisters? Only for Phil 'Taffy' Thomas to intervene and try to diffuse the situation by saying to us "Don't worry lads, I remember a similar confrontation, Swansea v Wrexham 1962, there were three of us......" all this while beer bottles were raining down around us! Luckily, 'Dog' Doyland appeared and saved the day. He was about 6 foot 10 and had a big length of lead piping down his trousers. Handy that!

Does anybody remember the Geography Field Trip to Swanage in 1976.(Taken by Gary Doyland and 'Pikey')? "Sinjuns raise your voices!" I'm afraid that my memories of school life between 1971 and 1978 are not very rosy - mainly fear and dread (bit like the present in fact). A principal recollection is of the strangeness of some of the assemblies (hippy/pupil power hangover)- "Saucerful of Secrets" played on the school organ - emotional political speeches from 6th formers - being asked to read out random words from a hymnbook. The "Schools Out" incident (see Sept 10 below) was memorable. Pseudo-public school atmosphere gradually dissipated - impact of punk, drink & drugs c.1977 (Nick Peters are you still alive?) Interesting to see that Inspector Knacker has finally caught up with Ackers. Maybe I should use this opportunity to mention my book "Subterranean City" in all good bookshops (and Waterstones)- any excuse for publicity. Guest Book is an interesting idea - but we mustn't get too nostalgic - a good thing the old place has gone - did it get used as a School Disco-type club for a while after 86?

To John Greenway and the band. I was at Sinjuns 73-78. I saw the band. I remember (History Man) Meaden on drums at some point, is that true, or was that a subsequent gig, or was it all a dream? If I remember correctly John Murphy played Bass? I bumped into his brother Paul in Taybridge road a couple of years back. He had moved abroad, he had a bar in Goa or some such place; I was drunk at the time. Anyhow he was over in London having treatment for a tumour on the brain. He was pretty unwell. He was in good humour though, he said stoically that he didn’t mind going so long as they gave him intravenous whisky.

My second foray into this site. Seem to be lots of comments from the 1970's group but very few from my era (53-58) - were these years the dark ages? I was "persuaded" to play the oboe in the school orchestra and spent several years apparently playing in various performances but, actually, never played a note! Push came to shove when I was required to play a solo in "When you wish upon a star" but some guardian angel played it on the flute instead and Semmons never even noticed. Also in the choir and was the "server" at one Founder's Day service at St Mary's. Cheers to everyone from Canada.

I was at Sinjuns between 68 and 75. Does anyone remember the fabulous Blizzard pop superstars of 74? Spiny Norman, John Murphy, Les Moir and myself on drums, and their self-styled manager and roadie, Clive 'Wif' Smith. How in tune with the spirit of the times we were: Brian 'thank you' Davies murdering Slade's Get down and get with it and Paul Meaden hollering a splendid version of Summertime blues.Or were you also there on the day Mr Ducket uttered the immortal question in maths: ' What dou you do with Pi, Pooley?' To which Pooley cheekily replied 'Put it in the oven, Sir!' Needless to say Pooley was immediately dispatched. Who DID delve into the bottom drawer of DeCaux's desk in search of his slipper? Who lobbed it out of the window into the corridor, just as the man himself was striding towards us? And who was punished for this impromptu performance. Perhaps you also remember Mr Ashby leading Chris Plant by the earhole across the front of the class presumably as a lesson on how not to speak to a German master. What a great site. All the names simply come flooding back. A warm greetings to all of you.

Having just found the site and read through the entries many memories come flooding back. Some good and some not so good. Simon Dale - where are you? I still remember Erwen! To all of you guys out there that shared those years with me a very big hello. Please get in touch. Can anyone remember the name of the master that had the DB5. I now believe what my parents used to say to me that schooldays were the bestdays. For me they were. Looking forward to hearing from some of you.

I had happy years at Sinjuns between 1958-65. Does anyone remember the incident in 1959 or 60 when a group were trapped by other pupils in the old Science block for the whole morning. There were water bombs flying everywhere as people attempted escape. I seem to remember that Escudier was a prime target. Has anyone heard from Tony Woon Sam. I had an incorrect e-mail address for him, and would like to get in touch. Finally, does anyone remember someone called B. Filkins in the 6th in 1964-65. Apparently he bore an uncanny resemblance to me.

Chas, I remember you vaguely. Definately remember Harry Hawkes for who could forget that scruffy skinny bugger.The Wheedons ring a bell so do Barton,Myers, Tim Hudson, Alan Badcock. I can remember it being very violent at times especially the riot at the old science block. All I can remember of this was getting swiped round the head with a cricket bat. Arding & Hobbs was a favorite haunt in the lunchhour. I seemed to remember that I got caned for passing off old pennies as Half-a-crowns after dipping in Silver Nitrate to make nice & shiny. God I loved chemistry.

Well !! reading through all the recollections and comments it is clear to me that either other people's grey cells have deteriorated at a slower pace than mine or their schooldays were more memorable that mine. Some names and incidents have stirred vague recollections but then again I might just be filling the gap with imagination. I was a Sinjun 1959 - 64. I was in Beauchamp and remember Dr Presswood, particularly for some reason his sex education talk which I believe I have recovered from now. I also recall (or invented) when he invited an amateur operatic company to perform the Barber of Seville to the whole school and during the performance someone unscrewed the radiator valve and let of a stream of hot water. I remember some of the teachers mentioned. I was in the CCF (I think the teachers who ran this were Mr Williams and a South African Mr or Dr Tait) but can't remember much about it except I could never get my boots shiney enough or my belt spotless (the word blanco pops into mind here??) anyway I only joined so I could use the rifle range. OOh a sudden recollection here, Harry Hawkes and someone Collyer who marched out of step and both who were as untidy as me in the Army uniform. I remember the fives court and the tuck shop. The fellow inmates I remember are Alan Spooner (here I think of Mod haircut, pac-a-mac and road biking), Vic Bushell, Jim Ward, Keith Walker (who I would love to make contact with again - I was best man at his wedding and have lost touch), Micky Weatherall, Mick Flack, Ray Sheppard, "Harry" Andrews, a couple of Wheedons ( one Tall the other not ). A Webb (Brian I think). It all gets a bit blurry now. Oh yes and of course Martin Amis son of Kinglesy who came and went. I recently looked up Sinjuns in his autobiography and found out that he considered Sinjuns to be an extremely violent School perhaps thats why I can't remember anything I must still be concussed.

Aah.. the memories come flooding back. As a part time teacher now, some of my fondest memories are of some of the masters, in particular Ronald Walker. He scared the crap out of us at age 11, but in hindsight was probably one of the softest men on the staff. I remember his cloak being immaculately pleated at the 'sleeves', and his insistance on us using fountain pens. He revealed in an interview (for 'blob' I think) that he did agricultural work during the war as he was a pacifist and refused to fight. I always looked forward to those lessons where we would read books like 'Moonfleet', and have to this day a passion for books. I expect he's no longer with us but I'd have liked to thank him personally. A gentle man and a gentleman. Ken Duckett. - another fine teacher who seemed to have a pair of eyes for every boy in the class, and would ask you a question the minute your mind wandered. Rumour had it that he was the hardest caner that ever walked god's earth, but I can't remember him punishing anyone, merely ask them to "preshent yeshterday'sh homework to me in room Y". He was a good nut. Does anyone remember how the members of the science dept. used to take tea in the science block with several bunsen burners under a steaming kettle? Was it just me, or did certain members of the faculty appear somewhat 'over-refreshed' when they took us for afternoon lessons? By the way, I was prompted to look for this website when, on entering a classroom in a school at which I teach, all the boys stood in silence. -I'd forgotten all about that protocol and the sound of chairs scraping floor as they stood was very evocative. Great site. - Keep it up!

Actually on the subject of Tim Scale and music, I remember Tim bunking off his proper lesson in order to attend the frivolities that took place in Nobby (Deaf) Norman’s Shouting English Class. Nobby began to call the register in his hoarse Wednesday afternoon manner when suddenly, as he was not visually impaired beyond his bottleneck glasses and the sweat that permanently dripped from his balding pate through the wiry silver antennae eyebrows into his bloodied Johnny Walker soaked eyes, he spotted Tim. Nobby pushed the ink-stained elastoplast holding together his wilting lenses further up the bridge of his nose with trembling index finger until his eyeballs made contact with glass. “You boy, what is your name?” Tim hesitated for a moment then smiled, “Plant Sir … Robert Plant Sir”. Plant was not on the register and so Tim was encouraged to say a little more about himself. He did so, at length, talking enthusiastically of having formed a band with another pupil at the school called Page. The class kept relatively cool at first but the volcano of suppressed laughter erupted with the force of Mount Etna when Nobby asked the name of the band. Alas poor Nobby for he knew not Led Zeppelin.

I've just found the site, -great! I was at Sinjuns 74-79 and left to become an apprentice telephone engineer. I've been a pro musician for the last 10 or so years (Does any one remember the music teacher called D.Flatt?!), and also teach at Wellington College, Reading Bluecoat School, and Brunel University. You showed us how to "Keep Brittan Tidy", everytime time we gobbed on the floor you made us pick it up and put it in our pocket. You ensured understanding of the properties of concentrated ammonia, by encouraging us to inhale deeply from the bottle. You always managed to catch the bottle before we hit the floor. I think Micky T preferred to buy his sandwiches from Sushil, who apparently had a better quality of cheese! BTW, wasn't Tracey's nickname "Panhead" rather than "Panface"? I've been trying to list out all the nicknames from our class and year, although I'm not sure about some of the ruder ones (such as L. Heavy's one applying to his discoloured dentition, or L. Hewitt's applying to his underwear markings!), or the names people got called referring to their parentage and/or their mother's alleged bedroom habits with large amounts of rastas!!! I also just got reminded, on the phone to Micky T, of the time you had a fight with him (2nd or 3rd yr?) tomato-nose city! Pity it wasn't little Alf who got a bloody nose, what a thief, what a git, what an audacious thing to do, sticking a mirror to his shoe so he could attempt to look up Cathy Ayres's skirt! Later!

Ive had a few emails from old sinjuns whom are petrefied to think that some people still remember there nick names........so heres a few more from the years 76-82; Icky,Chopper,Ski slope, Pan head, Pen head,Tank,Foot,God fried ears,Franny,Dickie mint,Polo,Duck,Masty,paint pot,Persil,Rat,Cat,Smit,Cider,Stick,Cornelius,tap head,Steve the hatchet and many more, some too rude for this fair place, but I bet you know many more, so why not remind me and maybe even show me how it wasnt just our years!!...Oh and none of those bill blake obcenities after all Im sure none of us knew the other's parents that well.(well maybe some did !!!!)

I was at Sinjuns from 1976-1983 (GB). I have to say I've rarely thought about the school in the intervening years, other than to reflect on one of my proudest achievements still - a whole school career without a trip over THE BAR. It was only through a recent look at the Friends Reunited website that made me aware of the Sinjuns site. This message board more than anything has brought back memories, particularly as linked to the memories and names provided by Messrs Plant & Taylor earlier on this page. I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember everyone's name. Perhaps future contributions to the site will result in full pupil and staff name lists? However, those I do remember in my GB class include: Michael Taylor (sell you another sarnie, Micky - 5p as usual?), Andy Plant, Jamal Acktar (who still owes me 25p or 30p -it'll be good to find him, esp. for the accrued interest), Tony Foy, Paul Shipley, Nicky Wale, John Harrop (the human Hyena), David Lister, Paul Gough, Sushil Samant, Rohan Lachmansingh, 'Stick' & 'Smithy', Darren Bradshaw, Alfie Wheeler (in prison now I should think), Martin Allen, Ben Maclean, Nigel Bates, David Welch, Carl Parsons, Richard Long, Adrian Uttley. [Somewhere, I have a print of the 3GB class photo (c.1978) which I will try to send in soon.] Then, for LT, BB and WB: Julian (Richard) Honeywill, 'Pan-face' Richard Tracey, Nye Harries, Jones, Phil Viner, Watson, Sherif, Perry, Donker, Edam (the year's 'top swot'). On the staff side, I remember Alan Ackers (Biology. Hmm, enough said), 'Fritz' Taylor (a strict but good man, I felt, who truly loved the school), Chippy Smith, Steven Farrow (Physics and first year form master), Chidwick (French), Cunningham (Maths. A multiplication tables sadist and Marilyn Monroe fan who had a brother, he told us, called Tam who used to demolish policemen and telephone kiosks), Edwards (German), Gary Doyland (Geography/Geology - who helped set my course for a Geology degree - thanks Gary), Paul Meaden (History), Beanland (Chemistry sadist who mis-used crocodile clips (attached to pupils' ear-lobes), acid (who was the kid stretchered off to hospital one year?), and gunpowder. Safely in an institution now, I hope), Elsgood ([Graphic] Art - William Blake), Cathy Ayres (English. How could anyone forget her?!). And what about Mr Hadjigeorghiou and triple maths on Wednesday mornings, 3rd year? Or poor Miss Omesu, whom 3GB drove to a nervous breakdown in a space of weeks? Well...Undoubtedly there's a lot more to dredge up. Next time, maybe.

Just read through the guest book and don't recognise many names. I was only there for 4 years and decided to leave in my interest & the schools. Remember 'Fritz' when I went to my 1st french class and he said "Fermez la Porte" I closed the door as I was last in and he presumed I could speak french. Many visits to Presswoods office, but unfortunately not for lunch (the cane usually). Dixon was great as he let me go to paint pictures around the area, great for a quick smoke! West for chemistry was good if you knew it, I actually learnt a lot there and still love the subject. Short, the most evil bastard at the school, got belted by him many times, because I couldn't do a frigging handstand. Anybody remember 'The Order of the Golden Slipper' that he ran. Perverse bastard. I was definately one of the bad boys of this era 1960 ish. So bad I still cannot remember most of it.

More funny stories please. Like.........What about when "Nobby" Norman lined us all up outside Crooks office and whilst he was inside with Crook, Doylan (our form master) came along and took us all back to the classroom. I wish I could have seen Nobby's face when he opened the door from Crooks office to call us in and no one was there. Once we were teacherless for a lesson and someone dropped a match into a desk, then 2 or 3 boys pissed in the desk to put the fire out, "allegedly ". "Piggy" Dixon chasing Donald McTernan around the art class, trying to give him the slipper and us lot cheering on Donald. Who can remember my cousin, Philip Goodson, falling through the skylight, whilst on the roof trying to retrieve a football. If I remember rightly his fall was cushioned, because he landed on top of a couple of unsuspecting 1st or 2nd years. When in the 1st year, being rounded up by the 5th year into the Fives Court. Then being released one by one and given a good kicking as you tried to escape through the tunnel of waiting 5th years. (I can't remember inflicting this tradition on the 1st years when I was in the 5th year. Did we?) Anyone else remember anything similar????????
